He graduated from the Delaware County Community College (A.A. 1975)\, Eastern College (B.A. 1977)\, and the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (M. Div. 1980\, M.A.R. 1981). He was ordained a Deacon in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1979\, and was ordained an Elder in 1982. \nHe began his ministerial career as the Director of Youth Ministries at the Olivet United Methodist Church in Coatesville\, PA from 1975 – 1977. In 1977 he was appointed to serve as the pastor of the Bethesda UMC in Phoenixville\, PA. He served there until 1982\, when he was appointed pastor of the Chatham UMC in Chatham PA. After 8 years at Chatham\, he was appointed Sr. Pastor of the Ranck’s UMC in New Holland\, PA\, serving there from 1990 until 1998 when he was appointed Sr. Pastor of the UMC of the Resurrection in Lionville\, PA. He served that congregation until December\, 2001\, when following the events of 9/11/2001\, he was mobilized for military service. (He had served as a member of the United States Air Force Reserve Chaplain Service since 1979) \nWhile mobilized\, he spent three years as the Deputy Command Chaplain at the Headquarters of the U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk\, VA and two and a half years as the Deputy Religious Affairs Advisor in the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon in Washington\, D.C. \nFollowing his release from active duty military service\, he continued his service as a traditional reservist\, serving as the reserve assistant to the Command Chaplain of the United States Air Force Reserve Command. After 30 years of service\, he retired in June 2009 with the rank of Colonel. \nIn July of 2007\, he was appointed as Sr. Pastor of the Glossbrenner UMC in Mount Joy\, PA. He served as the Sr. Pastor of the Asbury UMC in Allentown\, PA from 2010 to 2014\, and served as the Sr. Pastor of the Thorndale UMC in Thorndale\, PA. from 2014 until he retired in 2017. The book is an analysis of exposure to Harlem Renaissance intellectuals\, and worship at Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist on the German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer\, during his year of post-doctoral study at Union Seminary in New York\, 1930-31. \nDr. Williams’ research interests include Christological ethics\, theological anthropology\, Christian social ethics\, the Harlem Renaissance\, race\, politics and black church life. His current book project includes a religious critique of whiteness in the Harlem Renaissance. In addition\, he is working on a book analyzing the reception of Bonhoeffer by liberation activists in apartheid South Africa. \nDr. Williams received his Ph.D. in Christian ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary in 2011. He earned a Master’s degree in Theology from Fuller in 2006 and a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from Westmont College in 1995. Dr. Amy Butler\n\n\n\n\n\nRev. Dr. Amy Butler is Senior Minister of The Riverside Church in New York. \n\n\n\nPastor Amy Butler is the seventh Senior Minister and first woman to serve at the helm of the Riverside Church. She holds degrees from Baylor University\, the International Baptist Theological Seminary\, and Wesley Theological Seminary. Pastor Amy’s professional ministry career began as the director of a homeless shelter for women in New Orleans\, Louisiana; she later became Associate Pastor of Membership and Mission at St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in the city of New Orleans. In 2003\, Butler was called to the position of Senior Minister of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington\, D.C.’s Chinatown\, where she was also the first woman to lead that historic congregation.  After 11 years in Washington\, D.C.\, the congregation of The Riverside Church voted to call Pastor Amy to the Senior Minister position.  She often talks about what a gift and responsibility it is to be here at The Riverside Church in this moment\, working to live into a legacy of social justice advocacy and gospel community building.\n\n\n\nWhen she’s not busy leading the church\, Pastor Amy enjoys exploring New York\, taking in a concert or a Broadway show\, or hosting friends for dinner. She is an avid reader and loves to write\, recently completing her first memoir which was be published by Penguin Random House Books in 2018. Pastor Amy is a single mom to three amazing young adults who are each making their way in the world; they are her favorites.  She is nourished by the support and care of the Riverside community\, excited for the voice and witness of this church\, and optimistic about the impact faith communities have on the world.
