SUMMARY:Campolo Scholars Forum with Rev. Mark D. Moore '77\, '80\, '81
DESCRIPTION:Understanding Military Chaplaincy: the Basic\, the Challenges\, and the Ethics\nWhen: 10 AM EST\nWhere: Walton Hall Prayer Chapel and Via Zoom \nMark Moore\, a retired Air Force Reserve Chaplain\, will share with us some basics on military chaplaincy – how does one become a military chaplain? What are the requirements to be considered if one feels called to this area of ministry? How does one maintain their own faith tradition integrity while serving those of many faiths\, including those of no faith?\n\nAdditionally\, having served at every level – from a chaplain to an Air Force Wing to serving as an advisor to senior military leadership – including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff – he will share the differing responsibilities and roles chaplains assume as their careers progress.  We will also discuss some of the ethical issues involved in serving as a spiritual leader in the military.\nBiography\nThe Rev. Mark D. Moore was born and raised in Norwood\, PA and graduated from Yeadon High School in Yeadon\, PA in 1973. He graduated from the Delaware County Community College (A.A. 1975)\, Eastern College (B.A. 1977)\, and the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (M. Div. 1980\, M.A.R. 1981). He was ordained a Deacon in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1979\, and was ordained an Elder in 1982. \nHe began his ministerial career as the Director of Youth Ministries at the Olivet United Methodist Church in Coatesville\, PA from 1975 – 1977. In 1977 he was appointed to serve as the pastor of the Bethesda UMC in Phoenixville\, PA. He served there until 1982\, when he was appointed pastor of the Chatham UMC in Chatham PA. After 8 years at Chatham\, he was appointed Sr. Pastor of the Ranck’s UMC in New Holland\, PA\, serving there from 1990 until 1998 when he was appointed Sr. Pastor of the UMC of the Resurrection in Lionville\, PA. He served that congregation until December\, 2001\, when following the events of 9/11/2001\, he was mobilized for military service. (He had served as a member of the United States Air Force Reserve Chaplain Service since 1979) \nWhile mobilized\, he spent three years as the Deputy Command Chaplain at the Headquarters of the U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk\, VA and two and a half years as the Deputy Religious Affairs Advisor in the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon in Washington\, D.C. \nFollowing his release from active duty military service\, he continued his service as a traditional reservist\, serving as the reserve assistant to the Command Chaplain of the United States Air Force Reserve Command. After 30 years of service\, he retired in June 2009 with the rank of Colonel. \nIn July of 2007\, he was appointed as Sr. Pastor of the Glossbrenner UMC in Mount Joy\, PA. He served as the Sr. Pastor of the Asbury UMC in Allentown\, PA from 2010 to 2014\, and served as the Sr. Pastor of the Thorndale UMC in Thorndale\, PA. from 2014 until he retired in 2017. In retirement he served as Pastor of the Hibernia UMC in Coatesville PA until 2020. \nMark has been married to Karen (Dearstyne) since 1977. They have one adult son\, M. Dustin Moore\, who is married to Kristyn DiDominick. SUMMARY:Campolo Fellows Lecture Series: Chapel with Eastern Alum\, Dr. Bishop Donald Hilliard\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Eastern University has a long history of developing Christian faith- and thought-leaders (e.g. Tony Campolo\, Brenda Salter McNeil\, Shane Claiborne\, Bryan Stevenson\, just to name a few) who are impacting the world with the Good News of the Whole Gospel.  When Tony talks about former students of his who spent their formative college years studying and preparing for ministry at Eastern University and are now setting an example of Christian leadership\, he always includes Dr. Bishop Don Hilliard at the top of the list. \n\nWhen we launched the Campolo Fellows Lecture Series\, made possible by a generous grant from the Baugh Family Foundation\, Tony encouraged us to invite Dr. Hilliard back to his alma mater so he could challenge and inspire the Campolo Scholars and the larger Eastern Community.  We’re honored to have Dr. Hilliard preach in our chapel service this morning and look forward to him mentoring\, teaching and encouraging the Campolo Scholars throughout the semester. \n\nBishop Donald Hilliard\, Jr. serves as the senior pastor of Cathedral International—The Historic Second Baptist Church in Perth Amboy\, NJ. Dr. Hilliard’s willingness to “Say Yes!” to the Lord has fostered his ability to provide leadership in the exponential growth of the church over the last 35 years. Now\, “One Church in Four Locations\,” Cathedral International has expanded its ministry to serve the specific needs of four different locations in New Jersey: Cathedral International in Perth Amboy\, Cathedral International in Asbury Park\, Cathedral International in Plainfield\, and Iglesia Catedral in Perth Amboy. Cited by the American Baptist Churches (USA) as a model for church growth\, Cathedral International is a multifaceted\, relevant church that has grown exponentially throughout the years. Through the facilitation of the gospel via Live Stream\, Cathedral International now reaches thousands of homes across the globe. In the near future\, Cathedral International anticipates building a new campus in Cranbury\, NJ on 98 acres of land. \nDr. Hilliard’s transformational mindset is reflected in the numerous community development initiatives established under his leadership. He is the Founder and CEO of the Cathedral Community Development Corporation (CCDC)\, an umbrella organization providing a variety of outreach services to the local community. The “Cathedral Community Counseling Center”\, a professional clinical counseling center\, provides mental health support for both the church and the community. These services are provided by Masters and Doctoral level therapists. The “Cathedral Family Life Center” houses a banquet center\, library and a creative dance center and Sunday School. Cathedral International has been cited by the city and the state as a major catalyst for the renewal and development of the City of Perth Amboy. \nDr. Hilliard is the author of 14 books on a variety of relevant topics. His most recent books\, “Midlife\, Manhood\, & Ministry\,” was released April 2013 and “55 and Counting\,” was released in November 2013. To purchase additional books log on to amazon.com or donaldhilliardjr.org. \nA 2002 and 2013 Hampton Ministers Conference speaker\, Bishop Hilliard has ministered at various churches\, conferences\, and conventions across the United States and internationally. Vision Casting\, birthed out of Bishop Hilliard’s call to serve visionaries and dreamers\, is a motivational-action company formed to encourage Executive leadership to pursue life with also a power motivational speaker\, and a disciplined mindset for success. \nIn 2006 after a life-threatening illness\, Dr. Hilliard reinvented himself again by resurrecting his gift of painting by creating original pieces of art through his abstract expressionistic company\, Pulpit to the Palate Art.  His premier collections of over 70 original pieces include the recently exhibited “Let Go\, Let Gesture: Abstract Ascension” series at the Dragonfly Fine Arts Gallery in Martha’s Vineyard as well as “Divine Liturgy in Abstract” and “From the Pulpit to the Palate” series. His paintings grab your attention with brilliant use of color and shapes with the purpose of speaking to your mind and soul while creating rare moments of introspection.  To purchase artwork please log on to donaldhilliardjr.org. \nDr. Hilliard’s creativity does not stop with his gift of painting\, but extends into the theatrical arts arena. In April 2013\, Dr. Hilliard’s first theatrical production\, “Stop the Funeral” debuted at the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway\, NJ to a sold-out crowd featuring Marvin Sapp. “Stop the Funeral” was written in an attempt to create a sense of urgency of what we must do to change the mindset of the often misguided\, misunderstood and sometimes forgotten youth\, and has gained momentum as a movement to end senseless violence in our streets.  In 2018\, Bishop Hilliard partnered with The Zakee Bowser Enrichment Foundation presented a “Stop The Funeral” event to show awareness of the violence in our communities through spoken word\, live hip hop\, choirs\, steel band\, steppers\, mime and dancers. \nOrdained into the Gospel ministry by the Progressive National Baptist Convention\, Inc. in 1978 and consecrated a Bishop under the hand of Bishop John R. Bryant in 1995\, Bishop Donald Hilliard\, Jr. is the Presiding Prelate Emeritus and founder of the Covenant Ecumenical Fellowship and Cathedral Assemblies (CEFCA)\, now known as Covenant Fellowship Alliance (CFA). He continues to serve as Father and Influencer to countless sons and daughters across the nation.\n \nPassionate about education\, Dr. Hilliard is the former Pastor – Scholar in Residence at Palmer Theological Seminary\, as well as a former member of the Board of Directors at Somerset Christian College\, Somerset\, NJ. He is the former Group Convener and Mentor of the Donald Hilliard Fellows Doctor of Ministry Program and visiting professor of Church Renewal at Drew University Theological School in Madison\, NJ. Most recently\, he was named the Distinguished Practitioner in Residence at the New Brunswick Theological Seminary to assist in the development of clergy care groups and teaching in the consecration in urban ministry. \nDr. Hilliard earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Eastern College (now Eastern University)\, St. David’s\, Pennsylvania\, the Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary\, Princeton\, NJ\, and an earned Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary\, Dayton\, Ohio\, as a Dr. Samuel D. Proctor Fellow. He is also the recipient of various honorary doctoral degrees. \nFrom an array of community groups\, non-profit agencies and governmental associations\, Dr. Hilliard has received numerous awards and citations for his efforts inside the church and beyond\, including his role in the ongoing renewal of downtown Perth Amboy. A few of those honors include; the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award from Princeton Theological Seminary\, Princeton\, NJ (1995) and The American Baptist Church\, USA Evangelism Award (1996). \nBishop Hilliard was also inducted into the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College\, Atlanta\, GA. (1995)\, and received the Perth Amboy Chamber of Commerce Executive of the Year Award (1994)\, the Drew University Martin Luther King\, Jr. Humanitarian Award (1994) and the Distinguished Alumni of the Year\, Eastern University (2006). In 2008\, The New York Council of Churches presented Dr. Hilliard with the prestigious\, Clergy of the Year Award. He is a past board member of The Joint College of African-American Pentecostal Bishops\, and is a lifetime member of the NAACP. He has also received the “Humanitarian Award” from the National Conference for Community and Justice; and has also served as a commissioner for the Perth Amboy Redevelopment Authority. \nAs the son of the late Alease Elizabeth Crawford Hilliard-Chapman (December 28\, 1933 – August 26\, 2013) and the late Donald Hilliard\, Sr. (April 25\, 1930 – October 13\, 1983)\, Hilliard credits his parents for providing a stable and loving home where education and hard work were emphasized. On February 28\, 2014\, he launched the Donald and Alease Hilliard Chapman Foundation in honor of his parent’s legacy. \n“What you see over the last 35 years has been a divine leap of faith\,” said Hilliard\, who partners in ministry with his wife\, the Reverend Phyllis Thompson-Hilliard\, BA\, MA. They are the proud parents of three amazing daughters\, all whom have earned under graduate and graduate degrees\, a son-in-love\, and their one and only grandson\, Joseph Donald. \nBishop Hilliard is a servant of God who continues to say “Yes” to the Lord’s call on his life and by doing so has positively affected the lives of thousands with his gift to turn a glimmer of hope into opportunity. \n\n\nBishop Hilliard is now retired as the Presiding Bishop of the Covenant Ecumenical Fellowship and Cathedral Assemblies (CEFCA) and now serves as Bishop Emeritus\, having turned the reigns of CEFCA (now CFA) under the hand of Bishop Hollister Curtis Douglas in June 2018.  As Bishop Emeritus of the Reformation\, Bishop still serves as Retired Presiding Bishop at Large.

His doctoral field of study was systematic theology\, with a minor in philosophy of religion. \nA native of New York City\, George has been married to his wife\, Kim\, since 1979. They have three children: daughter Cameron is married to Garrett Vickrey\, a pastor in San Antonio\, and they have three daughters; son Rhett is married to Callie and is manager of the real estate division of the Dr Pepper Snapple company in Plano\, and they have one son; daughter Jillian is married to Chris Shannon and is an actress in New York City; they have one son. \nCAMPOLO FELLOWS LECTURE SERIES SCHEDULE \nWEDNESDAY\, APRIL 24\, 2019 \n10-10:50 am Eastern University Chapel – Gym (Open to the public\, all are welcome) Streamed live HERE \nText and Title: Mark 8: 27-38 The Quintessence of a Christian or Why We Have To Stop Defending Things Jesus Would Condemn. \nWhat is the mark\, the essential characteristic of a follower of Jesus that makes clear that we belong to him as his disciples? Our temptation to make it into a mere confession of faith in his identity as the Christ must be tied to our willingness to join him in his suffering mission of love for the world. Jesus’ passion must be seen in our compassion. Empathy that allows us to deny self for the sake of others shows that we understand the gospel. \n12 pm Lunch with Campolo Scholars\, faculty\, staff and guests – Walton Hall\, Baird Library \nTHURSDAY\, APRIL 25\, 2019 \n4:30-6 pm Systematic Theology with Dr. Donald Brash\, Palmer Theological Seminary – McInnis Hall 251 \nGuest Lecture and Discussion: God’s Freedom as Faithfulness: A Critique of Juergen Moltmann’s Social Trinitarianism and social and ecclesial implications \n6-7 pm\, Devotion and Dinner with Campolo Scholars\, Seminary students\, faculty\, staff and guests \nFRIDAY\, APRIL 26\, 2019 \n10-10:50 am Windows on the World Lecture – McInnis Auditorium (Open to public\, all are welcome) \nTitle: Christians without Borders: Toward a Trespassing Church \nIn a time when the world lauds groups like Doctors without Borders\, which goes everywhere and anywhere to bring lifesaving treatment and bear witness to human atrocities\, we hear too many Christians these days defending the borders of nation-states and remaining silent about political cruelty\, economic injustice and religious discrimination. Some Evangelical Christians defend the principles of the modern nation-state\, along with hallmarks of it such as nationalism\, militarism and capitalism\, as if these carry biblical authority. The consequences in human misery are seen on the southern border of the US\, the intractable stalemate in the Holy Land\, and the sweatshops of southeast Asia\, to name but a few. Naming idolatry is the first step in repentance\, but the fruits of repentance will be seen in renewed commitment to a kind of spiritual transnationalism that at the same time honors diverse cultures and promotes full human dignity and flourishing in the name of Jesus. \n11:30 am Luncheon and Moderated Q & A – Walton Hall\, Baird Library

Tyler has earned degrees from Georgetown University and University of Texas School of Law.  Called a “powerful advocate” and “rising star in the sector” by The Nonprofit Times\, she was named one of the nation’s top 50 nonprofit leaders in 2018. A member of the Texas and U.S. Supreme Court Bar\, Tyler has experience working in Congress\, in a private legal practice and serving as a law clerk for a federal judge. \nTyler has said the following about her service with BJC: \n“I feel called by God to do this work. There are many challenges and opportunities surrounding our First Freedom\, such as increasing religious pluralism and the unease it can bring. The Baptist Joint Committee\, with its rich history and deep expertise\, is uniquely positioned to be a voice for all people who want to defend and extend God-given religious liberty for generations to come. I truly believe that our entire world has never needed the BJC as much as it does right now\, and there is no limit to what God can do through us to preserve religious liberty for all of God’s children.” \nCAMPOLO FELLOWS LECTURE SERIES SCHEDULE WITH AMANDA TYLER  \nThursday\, March 21st  \n11:30 AM: Guest Lecturer/Discussion in Constitutional Law with Dr. Alexios Alexander \n1 PM: Lunch with Students\, Faculty\, Staff and Guests in the Dining Commons \n6 PM: Chapel and Chew with Palmer Theological Seminary: McInnis 251 (RSVP requested) \n7:30 PM:  Amanda Tyler: UP Close: Baird Library (Refreshments served\, RSVP requested) Please join us for a moderated conversation with Amanda Tyler about calling and vocation\, faith and law\, and life lessons on leadership.   \nFriday\, March 22nd \n10 AM: Windows on the World Lecture\, McInnis Auditorium \n11:30 AM: Luncheon and Q & A\, Baird Library \nThe Good\, the Bad and the Complicated Realities of the First Amendment’s Religion Clauses \nSummary: The first 16 words of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protect religious liberty in a unique way that has served the country well\, guarding against violent inter-religious conflict that has plagued –and continues to plague – many other parts of the globe. Yet both in the past and present\, the United States has failed to live up to the Constitution’s ideals of freedom for all. In this lecture\, Tyler will survey the history of how our Constitution protects religious freedom\, exploring the contributions of colonial Baptists to its language\, and discuss some of its shortcomings as interpreted and applied by the U.S. Supreme Court. She will highlight some of the most complicated and nuanced areas of concern for religious liberty today\, including what we even mean we say “religious freedom.”

The two big boxes into which most Americans try to fit\, and sometimes force\, their faith are “conservative” and “progressive.” Like any labels\, these are both defining and restrictive. What might be possible if the church returned to the big tent philosophy of both/and\, determined to be a church of Spirit and Truth? \n\n\nThe complete list of the Visiting Campolo Fellows and their sermons and talks this Spring semester can be found here:  https://campolocenter.org/campolo-fellows-lecture-series-spring-2019/ \n\nIf you have any questions about the speakers or would like more details of these events\, please don’t hesitate to contact\, Campolo Center Executive Director\, Robert Gauthier directly at rgauthier [at] eastern [dot] edu or 610-341-1715.\n\nWHAT IS THE CAMPOLO CENTER?\nEastern University launched the Campolo Center for Ministry on July 1\, 2014 to institutionalize and honor Tony and Peggy Campolo\, each distinguished alumni\, who have dedicated themselves to faithfully bearing witness to the Good News of the Gospel in their private and public lives. \n\nWHO ARE CAMPOLO SCHOLARS?\nThe Campolo Center seeks to identify\, recruit\, financially support and mentor students who demonstrate a calling\, giftedness and commitment to vocational Christian service in a church or para-church ministry.  We are committed to partnering with dedicated\, spiritually-gifted\, ministry-focused students\, their family and home church\, Eastern University and its network of donors. These partnership relationships will invest in the education\, training and spiritual formation of servant-leaders for the church and para-church ministries. \nIt is the vision of Tony and Peggy Campolo and a goal of the Campolo Center that Campolo Scholars graduate with as little student debt as possible. The goal is that these future leaders can fulfill their calling to vocational Christian ministry unencumbered by the burden of needing to repay student loans.  To that end\, the Campolo Center offers generous scholarships to students admitted into the Campolo Scholars Program. \nWHO ARE CAMPOLO FELLOWS?\nIt is also priority to encourage\, inspire and mentor the Campolo Scholars during their formative years at Eastern.  To that end\, we launched the Campolo Fellows Lecture Series to introduce the Campolo Scholars to faith- and thought-leaders influenced and inspired by Tony and Peggy\, who share their vision for a holistic gospel that combines a personal commitment to Jesus and the pursuit of social justice.  These leading communicators and practitioners of the faith are asked to engage the entire Eastern community in public forums and meet with\, encourage and mentor the Campolo Scholars to use their gifts and training for the benefit the Church of Jesus Christ and all of God’s people. \n

DESCRIPTION:The final segment of the fall 2019 Campolo Fellows Lecture Series will take place next week\, November 7-9\, 2018\, when the Rev. Dr. Amy Butler delivers a series of talks for the Campolo Center for Ministry\, Eastern University and Palmer Theological Seminary.  The spring 2019 visiting fellows will be announced soon.\n\n\n\nThe three-day series will conclude with Dr. Butler’s lecture on Friday\, November 9th entitled\, Preaching the Gospel when the World is Falling Apart.  She summarizes her talk as follows:\n\n\n\nJesus didn’t start a church\, he started a movement.  Many people are talking about whether the church can survive.  The more important question is\, should we?  If the church is not preaching a gospel relevant to people’s lives or that speaks prophetically to the brokenness of our world\, is it time we pass the microphone to someone else? \n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us for these public sermons\, lectures and discussions.\n\n\n\nWednesday\, November 7th 10 AM: Eastern University Chapel “Fear\, Forgiveness and Faith” John 20: 1-18 (Gym) (watch via live stream here)\n\n\n\n11:30 AM Lunch with Campolo Scholars\, students\, faculty\, staff and guests (Baird Library)\n\n\n\nThursday\, November 8th 11:30 AM Lunch with Campolo Scholars\, students\, faculty\, staff and guests (Walton Hall)\n\n\n\n1 PM: Class: INST 150: Intro to Faith\, Reason and Justice (HHC 104; limited seating)\n\n\n\n4:30 PM: Social Work 110: Human Diversity & Social Interaction (HHC 222; limited seating)\n\n\n\n6 PM “Chapel & Chew” Devotion with Campolo Scholars and Seminary (McInnis 251)\n\n\n\nFriday\, November 9th 10 AM: Windows on the World Lecture: “Preaching the Gospel when the World is Falling Apart” (McInnis Auditorium) 11:30-1 PM: Luncheon and Q & A with Faculty/staff\, Campolo Scholars\, student campus ministry leaders\, seminarians and special guests (Baird Library)\n\n\n\nFor questions about the Campolo Fellows Lecture Series\, please contact the Campolo Center at CampoloCenter@eastern.edu or 610-341-1715.\n\n\n\nABOUT Rev. Dr. Amy Butler\n\n\n\n\n\nRev. Dr. Amy Butler is Senior Minister of The Riverside Church in New York. \n\n\n\nPastor Amy Butler is the seventh Senior Minister and first woman to serve at the helm of the Riverside Church. She holds degrees from Baylor University\, the International Baptist Theological Seminary\, and Wesley Theological Seminary. Pastor Amy’s professional ministry career began as the director of a homeless shelter for women in New Orleans\, Louisiana; she later became Associate Pastor of Membership and Mission at St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in the city of New Orleans. In 2003\, Butler was called to the position of Senior Minister of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington\, D.C.’s Chinatown\, where she was also the first woman to lead that historic congregation.  After 11 years in Washington\, D.C.\, the congregation of The Riverside Church voted to call Pastor Amy to the Senior Minister position.  She often talks about what a gift and responsibility it is to be here at The Riverside Church in this moment\, working to live into a legacy of social justice advocacy and gospel community building.\n\n\n\nWhen she’s not busy leading the church\, Pastor Amy enjoys exploring New York\, taking in a concert or a Broadway show\, or hosting friends for dinner. She is an avid reader and loves to write\, recently completing her first memoir which was be published by Penguin Random House Books in 2018. Pastor Amy is a single mom to three amazing young adults who are each making their way in the world; they are her favorites.  She is nourished by the support and care of the Riverside community\, excited for the voice and witness of this church\, and optimistic about the impact faith communities have on the world. She played the cello in high school but that has absolutely no relevance to her current life.  Her children would say that her status as a licensed motorcyclist is the direct result of a midlife crisis\, but she disagrees.\n\n\n\nFollow Pastor Amy on her blog www.talkwiththepreacher.org or on social media @PastorAmyTRC.

SUMMARY:Campolo Fellows Lecture Series with Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis: October 24-26\, 2018
DESCRIPTION:The Campolo Fellows Lecture Series continues this week\, October 24-26\, 2018\, when Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis will be delivering a series of talks for the Campolo Center for Ministry\, Eastern University and Palmer Theological Seminary.  During this Mission Forum week\, Dr. Lewis will be discussing racial justice and reconciliation and economic justice as missional work. On Friday\, October 26th\, Dr. Lewis will deliver the Windows on the World lecture\, entitled The Pentecost Paradigm: What the Church Must do to Dismantle Racism. \n\n\nWhile the United States of America grows increasingly diverse\, there is a seeming resurgence of emboldened white-nationalism and re-assertion of white supremacy that threatens the Peace of the City and contradicts the character of God’s will on earth as it is in heaven.  The Church must bear witness to and embody the Good News — for all of God’s children — in this socio-cultural context.  But how do churches build immunity from racial and ethnic tensions that threaten to divide rather than unite congregations? Jacqui Lewis will share practical strategies to develop multiracial\, multicultural communities of faith based on her research\, experience and leadership with The Middle Project and as Senior Pastor at Middle Collegiate Church\, a vibrant\, multiracial\, welcoming\, and inclusive congregation in New York City.\n\n\nWe invite you to join us or tune in via live stream for the public events:\n\nWednesday\, October 24 Chapel at 10 AM: WWJD Mark 7:24-37 (watch via live stream here) NewCORE Conversation at 11 AM Youth Ministry in an Urban Setting at 4:30 PM\n\n\n\nThursday\, October 25 University Choir and Music Department at 2:30 PM Chapel and Chew with Palmer Theological Seminary at 6 PM\n\n\n\nFriday\, October 26 Window on the World at 10 AM: The Pentecost Paradigm: What the Church Must do to Dismantle Racism Luncheon and Q&A at 11:30 AM Honors Forum at 3 PM\n\n\n\nFor questions about the Campolo Fellows Lecture Series\, please contact the Campolo Center at CampoloCenter@eastern.edu or 610-341-1715.\n\n\n\nABOUT Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis\n\n\n\nWhen she was eight years old\, Jacqui Lewis hid under her bed as bullets flew in her Chicago neighborhood following the assassination of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. In that moment\, she felt called to work for racial equality in the United States.\n\n\n\nIt has been said that her 1\,000-member congregation\, Middle Collegiate Church in New York City\, has diversity that looks like the subway\, but its legendary love feels like home. Jews\, Buddhists\, atheists\, and Christians pack its sanctuary to standing-room-only capacity. Millennials and boomers\, trans and gay\, singles and families all call Middle their own. Middle Church is celebrated in Robert P. Jones’ book\, The End of White Christian America\, as an example of what revolutionary love can do to combat racism and xenophobia.\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Lewis’s latest book\, co-authored with husband\, Rev. John Janka. \n\n\n\nBelieving faith communities can lead the way to racial reconciliation\, Dr. Lewis co-founded The Middle Project with her spouse\, The Rev. John Janka\, which trains leaders to create a more just society. More than 500 faith leaders attended the 12th annual conference\, “Revolutionary Love – Complete the Dream” last April\, with speakers such as Van Jones\, Valarie Kaur\, William J. Barber II\, America Ferrara\, Parker Palmer\, Miguel De La Torre\, and Brian McLaren on faculty. “Revolutionary Love—The Politics of Faith” will take place April 5–7\, 2019.\n\n\n\nOrdained in the Presbyterian Church (USA)\, Dr. Lewis is the first African American and first woman to serve as senior minister in the Collegiate Church\, which was founded in New York City in 1628. She earned her M.Div. at Princeton Theological Seminary and her Ph.D. in Psychology and Religion at Drew University\, and has been adjunct faculty at Princeton Theological Seminary\, Union Theological Seminary\, The Graduate Theological Union\, New Brunswick Theological Seminary\, and Wesley Theological Seminary.\n\n\n\nDr. Lewis hosted “Just Faith\,” an on-demand television program on MSNBC.com and is a frequent media commentator. Her books include The Power of Stories: A Guide for Leaders in Multi-racial\, Multi-cultural Congregations\, The Pentecost Paradigm: Ten Strategies for Becoming a Multiracial Congregation\, and the children’s book\, You Are So Wonderful! Dr. Lewis is an Auburn Senior Fellow and is currently at work on a book about a path to revolutionary love.

SUMMARY:Campolo Fellows Speaker Series: Kent Annan
DESCRIPTION:The goal of Campolo Center is to invest time and resources in gifted and promising students who have made a commitment to serve the Church and the world through full-time vocational ministry. With your help\, we can provide the Campolo Scholars with supplemental curriculum and practical experiences that will enrich and shape their lives and faith while living in Christian community at Eastern. \nFor example\, each Monday we gather for fellowship\, prayer and to discuss a ministry-focused book together. This semester we’re reading Kent Annan’s insightful book\, Slow Kingdom Coming: Practices for Doing Justice\, Loving Mercy and Walking Humbly in the World\, and look forward to concluding our study of it with Kent when he joins us as our Campolo Fellow Speaker on October 21. \nMoreover\, out of our commitment to support the Campolo Scholars’ spiritual formation\, the Campolo Center sponsored their attendance at Renovare’s Making Ordinary Saints Conference at the Church of the Good Samaritan\, a vibrant community of faith with strong ties to Eastern. \nYour gift designated for Tony’s Team at the Campolo Center makes it possible for us to provide practical and substantive resources and opportunities for the Campolo Scholars that prepare them for a life of faithful and effective ministry. \n*** \nCampolo Fellows Speakers Series (Kent Annan: Co-founder and director of Haiti Partners\, author of Following Jesus Through the Eye of a Needle\, After Shock\, and Slow Kingdom Coming) \n10 AM Presentation (public) \n11:30 AM Lunch and Q & A (public) \n4-7 PM Life in Ministry Discussion and Dinner (Campolo Scholars and Special Guests)
