SUMMARY:Campolo Fellows Lecture Series: Chapel with Eastern Alum\, Dr. Bishop Donald Hilliard\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Eastern University has a long history of developing Christian faith- and thought-leaders (e.g. Tony Campolo\, Brenda Salter McNeil\, Shane Claiborne\, Bryan Stevenson\, just to name a few) who are impacting the world with the Good News of the Whole Gospel.  When Tony talks about former students of his who spent their formative college years studying and preparing for ministry at Eastern University and are now setting an example of Christian leadership\, he always includes Dr. Bishop Don Hilliard at the top of the list. \n\nWhen we launched the Campolo Fellows Lecture Series\, made possible by a generous grant from the Baugh Family Foundation\, Tony encouraged us to invite Dr. Hilliard back to his alma mater so he could challenge and inspire the Campolo Scholars and the larger Eastern Community.  We’re honored to have Dr. Hilliard preach in our chapel service this morning and look forward to him mentoring\, teaching and encouraging the Campolo Scholars throughout the semester. \n\nBishop Donald Hilliard\, Jr. serves as the senior pastor of Cathedral International—The Historic Second Baptist Church in Perth Amboy\, NJ. Dr. Hilliard’s willingness to “Say Yes!” to the Lord has fostered his ability to provide leadership in the exponential growth of the church over the last 35 years. Now\, “One Church in Four Locations\,” Cathedral International has expanded its ministry to serve the specific needs of four different locations in New Jersey: Cathedral International in Perth Amboy\, Cathedral International in Asbury Park\, Cathedral International in Plainfield\, and Iglesia Catedral in Perth Amboy. Cited by the American Baptist Churches (USA) as a model for church growth\, Cathedral International is a multifaceted\, relevant church that has grown exponentially throughout the years. Through the facilitation of the gospel via Live Stream\, Cathedral International now reaches thousands of homes across the globe. In the near future\, Cathedral International anticipates building a new campus in Cranbury\, NJ on 98 acres of land. \nDr. Hilliard’s transformational mindset is reflected in the numerous community development initiatives established under his leadership. He is the Founder and CEO of the Cathedral Community Development Corporation (CCDC)\, an umbrella organization providing a variety of outreach services to the local community. The “Cathedral Community Counseling Center”\, a professional clinical counseling center\, provides mental health support for both the church and the community. In April 2013\, Dr. Hilliard’s first theatrical production\, “Stop the Funeral” debuted at the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway\, NJ to a sold-out crowd featuring Marvin Sapp. “Stop the Funeral” was written in an attempt to create a sense of urgency of what we must do to change the mindset of the often misguided\, misunderstood and sometimes forgotten youth\, and has gained momentum as a movement to end senseless violence in our streets.  In 2018\, Bishop Hilliard partnered with The Zakee Bowser Enrichment Foundation presented a “Stop The Funeral” event to show awareness of the violence in our communities through spoken word\, live hip hop\, choirs\, steel band\, steppers\, mime and dancers.  \nOrdained into the Gospel ministry by the Progressive National Baptist Convention\, Inc. in 1978 and consecrated a Bishop under the hand of Bishop John R. Bryant in 1995\, Bishop Donald Hilliard\, Jr. is the Presiding Prelate Emeritus and founder of the Covenant Ecumenical Fellowship and Cathedral Assemblies (CEFCA)\, now known as Covenant Fellowship Alliance (CFA). He continues to serve as Father and Influencer to countless sons and daughters across the nation.\n \nPassionate about education\, Dr. Hilliard is the former Pastor – Scholar in Residence at Palmer Theological Seminary\, as well as a former member of the Board of Directors at Somerset Christian College\, Somerset\, NJ. He is the former Group Convener and Mentor of the Donald Hilliard Fellows Doctor of Ministry Program and visiting professor of Church Renewal at Drew University Theological School in Madison\, NJ. In December 2012\, Dr. Hilliard partnered again with Drew University Theological School as an Affiliate Associate Professor with the establishment of the Hilliard/Sweet Concentration as part of the Doctor of Ministry Program. Most recently\, he was named the Distinguished Practitioner in Residence at the New Brunswick Theological Seminary to assist in the development of clergy care groups and teaching in the consecration in urban ministry. \nDr. Hilliard earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Eastern College (now Eastern University)\, St. David’s\, Pennsylvania\, the Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary\, Princeton\, NJ\, and an earned Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary\, Dayton\, Ohio\, as a Dr. Samuel D. He is also the recipient of various honorary doctoral degrees. \nFrom an array of community groups\, non-profit agencies and governmental associations\, Dr. Hilliard has received numerous awards and citations for his efforts inside the church and beyond\, including his role in the ongoing renewal of downtown Perth Amboy. A few of those honors include; the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award from Princeton Theological Seminary\, Princeton\, NJ (1995) and The American Baptist Church\, USA Evangelism Award (1996). \nBishop Hilliard was also inducted into the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College\, Atlanta\, GA. (1995)\, and received the Perth Amboy Chamber of Commerce Executive of the Year Award (1994)\, the Drew University Martin Luther King\, Jr. Humanitarian Award (1994) and the Distinguished Alumni of the Year\, Eastern University (2006). In 2008\, The New York Council of Churches presented Dr. Hilliard with the prestigious\, Clergy of the Year Award. He is a past board member of The Joint College of African-American Pentecostal Bishops\, and is a lifetime member of the NAACP. He has also received the “Humanitarian Award” from the National Conference for Community and Justice; and has also served as a commissioner for the Perth Amboy Redevelopment Authority. \nAs the son of the late Alease Elizabeth Crawford Hilliard-Chapman (December 28\, 1933 – August 26\, 2013) and the late Donald Hilliard\, Sr. (April 25\, 1930 – October 13\, 1983)\, Hilliard credits his parents for providing a stable and loving home where education and hard work were emphasized. On February 28\, 2014\, he launched the Donald and Alease Hilliard Chapman Foundation in honor of his parent’s legacy. \n“What you see over the last 35 years has been a divine leap of faith\,” said Hilliard\, who partners in ministry with his wife\, the Reverend Phyllis Thompson-Hilliard\, BA\, MA. They are the proud parents of three amazing daughters\, all whom have earned under graduate and graduate degrees\, a son-in-love\, and their one and only grandson\, Joseph Donald. \nBishop Hilliard is a servant of God who continues to say “Yes” to the Lord’s call on his life and by doing so has positively affected the lives of thousands with his gift to turn a glimmer of hope into opportunity. \n\n\nBishop Hilliard is now retired as the Presiding Bishop of the Covenant Ecumenical Fellowship and Cathedral Assemblies (CEFCA) and now serves as Bishop Emeritus\, having turned the reigns of CEFCA (now CFA) under the hand of Bishop Hollister Curtis Douglas in June 2018.  As Bishop Emeritus of the Reformation\, Bishop still serves as Retired Presiding Bishop at Large.

DESCRIPTION:CCM alums\, Jon and Michelle Galdames-Henry join the Campolo scholars for their weekly Monday Meetings. \nBiography\n \nAfter graduating in May 2019 and marrying in June\, Jon and Michelle Galdames-Henry moved to Northern Virginia to begin ministering at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Burke\, VA. Michelle serves as the Children and Family Minister and Jon as the Youth and Family Minister. They love the beautiful community of people they serve – who have warmly embraced them – and are thankful for the incredible blessing of ministering together. Thanks to the support of donors like you\, we can offer generous scholarships for students dedicated to serve in ministry like Jon and Michelle and to help them graduate with little or no debt. This summer\, during a virtual Campolo Scholars reunion event\, Jon shared about the education and training they each received from the Campolo Scholars program at Eastern University. He felt that they had been prepared well for ministry\, and for its challenges – such as Covid-19. Michelle was excited to announce that she’s begun the candidacy to be ordained as a deacon in the ELCA and will begin seminary in January 2021. We look forward to Jon and Michelle leading one of our weekly Campolo Scholar Fellowship meetings this semester and sharing the lessons they’ve learned from doing life and ministry together. \nTopic \n“What Ministry Is Not: Figuring Out What Ministry Actually Looks Like and How to Prepare.”\nWe’ll be using Brene Brown’s “BRAVING” acronym for discussion\, so students should look up what Brene says it stands for and think about how it might tie into everyday ministry. Also\, they should come ready with their wonderings about day-to-day vocational ministry (dealing with volunteers\, budgets\, relationship building\, time management etc).

Dr. Joseph Modica meets with the Campolo scholars for their weekly fellowship meeting. \nBiography \nDr. Modica often remarks to students: “One day I couldn’t spell the word ‘chaplain\,’ then the next day\, I became one.”  Dr. Modica’s journey to Eastern University has been a circuitous\, yet enriching one.  Working as a foster care social worker\, attending seminary in Nyack\, NY\, pastoring a church in Queens\, NY\, working with the American Red Cross (Manhattan) Homeless Family Services\, and being a graduate student in New Jersey\, have all shaped his vocation.  He has personally discovered what Frederick Buechner observed when defining the word “vocation”: “The place God calls you to (Eastern University) is the place where your deep gladness (involvement in the lives of college students) and the world’s deep hunger (forming college students for lives of integrity and following Jesus) meet.”  He thanks God each day for this opportunity. \nDr. Modica sees himself primarily as a pastor-scholar: someone who attempts to model a robust gospel\, an ecumenical spirit\, a generous orthodoxy\, a formative hospitality and respectful conversations.

Amy Banka meets with the Campolo scholars for their weekly fellowship meeting. \nBiography \nAn ordained elder in the United Methodist Church\, having graduated from Palmer Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree\, Reverend Amy Banka was invited to join the Hopewell Church staff in June 2014\, as the Pastor of Young Adults and Leadership Development.  She became Associate Pastor in 2016\, and Lead Pastor in June 2018. \nNot having grown up in the Church\, Amy came to faith in Jesus Christ as a young adult. Upon hearing the gospel and feeling the presence of Christ in her heart and life\, she sought a church home where she could learn and grow as a Christian. She stumbled into Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Philadelphia\, where the pastor had been praying for God to send her young people to mentor. There she learned about God’s amazing heart for the broken and about Christ’s willingness and power to save\, heal\, and transform.  A few years later\, Pastor Amy heard God call her to pastoral ministry. \nAmy is married to Mike\, and they have two beautiful daughters\, Grace and Emily. Amy enjoys drinking coffee\, reading\, creative writing\, playing board games\, and visiting Longwood Gardens (red roses\, jasmine\, and lilacs smell the best!).

DESCRIPTION:Pastor James Williams meets with the Campolo scholars for their weekly fellowship meeting. \nBiography \nJames is honored to serve as Pastor at the historic First Baptist Church of Philadelphia. Having started with the congregation in January 2020\, James feels divinely called to continue the churches 321+ year ministry to the City of Brotherly Love\, with an emphasis on community outreach and engagement. Prior to accepting his call at FBC-Philadelphia\, James attended Palmer Theological Seminary where he earned his Master of Divinity degree. While at Palmer\, James served as a Presidential Scholar\, a Sider Scholar\, a Campolo Scholar\, and as a Church Mutual Religion Scholar. Apart from his pastoral work\, James serves in a variety of capacities for several organizations including International Ministries\, POWER\, AWAB\, Rittenhouse Clergy Association\, etc. James is very passionate about his work with the societally marginalized—particularly Philadelphia’s homeless population and the LGBT+ community. James also actively works on environmental sustainability projects\, partnering with The Green Church and others to promote responsible stewardship of God’s creation. Most recently\, James’ work has shifted to focus on the need for racial justice in this country (#blacklivesmatter). In his personal life\, James loves drumming and spending time with his family and his (many) cats.

Dr. Blocker earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Temple University\, a Master of Divinity from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Palmer)\, a Doctor of Ministry in Spiritual Transformation from Northern Theological Seminary\, and has done clinical training in marriage and family therapy at the Council for Relationships. She has 23 years experience in higher education\, decades of experience in criminal justice advocacy\, prison ministry\, youth advocacy\, and is a clergy leader with 30+ years in urban ministry. She is a full time faculty member at Eastern University where she also directs the Prison Education Program (@EUprisoned) and directs the new Center for Community Engagement. She volunteers with local organizations such as Decarcerate PA and the Philadelphia Bail Fund. Dr. J. is also co-editor of the Journal for Urban Mission\, and is the Founder/Overseer/President of a nonprofit religious organization\, The Fellowship of Women Clergy. She has served the community in numerous capacities over the years and has touched people of all ages\, walks of life\, and in various cross cultural contexts in the United States and abroad. Her Ph.D focused on American History with the minor in Middle Eastern studies from the University of California – Davis\, focusing her dissertation on the history of the American Protestant church in Israel and Palestine. Cannon’s Doctorate of Ministry in Spiritual Formation is from Northern Theological Seminary. Cannon holds an M.Div. From North Park Theological Seminary\, an M.B.A. from North Park University’s School of Business and Nonprofit Management\, and an M.A. in bioethics from Trinity International University. DESCRIPTION:Eastern University Chapel service featuring Campolo Fellow\, Rev. Dr. Mae Elise Cannon. \nBiography \nRev. Dr. Cannon is an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). Her ministry and professional background includes serving as the Senior Director of Advocacy and Outreach for World Vision-US\, the executive pastor of Hillside Covenant Church (Walnut Creek\, California)\, Director of Development and Transformation for Extension Ministries at Willow Creek Community Church (Barrington\, Illinois)\, and as a consultant to the Middle East for child advocacy issues for Compassion International. \nShe earned doctorates in History (Ph.D) and Spiritual Formation (D. Min). Her Ph.D focused on American History with the minor in Middle Eastern studies from the University of California – Davis\, focusing her dissertation on the history of the American Protestant church in Israel and Palestine. Cannon’s Doctorate of Ministry in Spiritual Formation is from Northern Theological Seminary. Cannon holds an M.Div. From North Park Theological Seminary\, an M.B.A. from North Park University’s School of Business and Nonprofit Management\, and an M.A. in bioethics from Trinity International University. Cannon completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Chicago in History\, Philosophy\, Social Studies\, of Science and Medicine.
